Sonic! Trader Joe’s! Dave and Busters! And the rest of the F-M wish list

With a spate of restaurant rumors accompanying spring construction – and an always-persistent chatter about new additions – we’re working to compile a rundown of the area’s most wanted restaurants and stores. We’ve heard plenty of interest in the usual suspects – Sonic, Trader Joe’s, Whole Foods, and the Cheesecake Factory, to name a few, but now’s your chance to make the pitch yourself.

So let’s hear them: In 50-ish words, tell us what you want and why we should get one. Write me,
leave a comment below (be sure to include your name and hometown), tweet @MarinoEccher, or call if you’re really ambitious (701-241-5502). We’ll be looking for your input between now and Wednesday afternoon, and run down the results in Saturday’s Forum.

Item No. 1 on my own wish list: White Castle. It may not be gourmet, but with 25,000 college students and a thriving bar culture in the area, how can a restaurant synonymous with cheap eats and 24/7 hours go wrong?

Original “Apprentice” to headline Young Professionals Summit

The region’s young professionals will get the chance to hear from a celebrity business voice this summer when Bill Rancic, Donald Trump’s original “Apprentice,” delivers the keynote speech at the Great Plains Young Professionals Summit.

Rancic, who won over discerning billionaire Donald Trump in 2004, has since forged his own career as a television personality. He currently stars in his own reality television show, “Giuliana and Bill,” with his wife, E! News host Giuliana Rancic.

More information on the summit, which will be held in Fargo June 15 – 17, is available here.

Outback Steakhouse not planning Fargo return

Despite the wishes of some Fargo-Moorhead diners, Outback Steakhouse is not planning a return to the market. Ever since Outback closed its Fargo location in April, 2008, it has been rumored that the restaurant planned to return.

Shannon Black with OSI Restaurant Partners, LLC, parent company of Outback Steakhouse, said “there are is not a restaurant scheduled to open in Fargo, N.D.”

Outback Steakhouse, known for its grilled steaks, chicken and seafood, spent 10 years in Fargo before closing its 401 38th St. S. location abruptly.

Rumors have also surfaced that The Cheesecake Factory and Cracker Barrel restaurants are coming to Fargo. Company representatives also refute those rumors.

Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, a chain of family restaurants known for home-style food, does not have a Fargo location on its development plan, according to a company spokeswoman. Cracker Barrel does have a Bismarck location.

The closest Cheesecake Factory restaurant is in Edina, Minn., and that’s not about to change anytime soon.

Mark A. Mears, chief marketing officer for The Cheesecake Factory, said, “while we are always on the look-out for A+ sites to grow The Cheesecake Factory, I am not aware of any plans to establish a location in the Fargo area at this time.”

The Cheesecake Factory is an upscale casual dining restaurant that offers more than 200 menu selections and 50 cheesecakes made fresh daily.

Tutti Frutti frozen yogurt coming to Fargo

Tutti Frutti is coming to Fargo.

The specialty frozen yogurt retailer with worldwide locations plans to open March 1 between Applebee’s and Starbucks in the Time Square development across from Walmart.

Froyo Ventures, owned by Rob and Stacy Ingstad and Tallie and Casey Colville, all of Valley City, N.D., owns the Fargo franchise for the store.

At Tutti Frutti, customers pick a cup and fill it with whatever frozen yogurt combinations they want.  There are also a variety of toppings available from fruit to cookies.

Yogurt flavors range from traditional vanilla and chocolate to more adventurous tastes like cake batter, peanut butter, and grape. The available flavors will rotate, said Stacy Ingstad.

“People are looking for a healthy alternative,” she said. “It’s nice to have a treat that can be good for you.”

AT&T’s Alltel acquisition means second iPhone carrier

Yesterday’s news of a Verizon iPhone makes Verizon the first carrier that serves the Dakotas or much of northwestern Minnesota to carry the device. But as AT&T moves into the territories it acquired when it merged with Alltel last year, the second might not be far behind.

The acquisition was designed to boost AT&T’s reach into rural areas (look at the carrier’s current coverage map, and you’ll see more than a few holes). New customers in Fargo-Moorhead still can’t sign up for AT&T – try it and you’ll get this message: “We are expanding our coverage every day but unfortunately this is one of the few areas we haven’t reached yet. Please check back soon. If you think you may have entered the wrong ZIP, please re-enter and try again.” – but existing Alltel customers can order an iPhone, and AT&T says the device will arrive later this month.

It’s not clear when AT&T will get a 3G data network up and running here, open retail stores, let customers in the area sign up for its service, or otherwise open its arms to the region. But if you want an iPhone and don’t care for Verizon, the option may be on the table sooner rather than later.

Downtown becomes “…downtown, baby!”

Whenever you think about downtown Fargo, the Downtown Community Partnership wants you to do it with a little more oomph.

The group announced a new image campaign this afternoon. The gist is short and to the point: “….downtown, baby!” (I can’t help but think Vince Vaughn in “Swingers” here).

The campaign – a collaborative effort between the Downtown Community Partnership, Fargo Downtowner, Spider and Company, the Kilbourne Group, and our very own Forum Communications Company – aims to brand downtown “as a destination which consists of visuals of various downtown establishments and personalities.”

From the announcement:

…downtown, baby! is the answer to all things Downtown and aims to promote everything Downtown has to offer. Where are you going to shop? Live? Get your hair done? Eat at a restaurant? Socialize with your friends? Visit art galleries? Grab a mocha? Educate and study? Catch your favorite band? Watch a production? Schedule a checkup? Tune-up your car? Clean your teeth? Receive legal advice? Design a building/project? View classic cars? Enjoy a parade? …downtown, baby!

Ads for the campaign will air Friday on WDAY/WDAZ. You can see an early generic cut (including a cameo by a certain Fargo mayor) here.

KotiKites and WindSports opens

The wind may be bitterly cold today, but a new store in downtown Fargo is celebrating the breeze. KotiKites and WindSports opened today at 102 Broadway.

The store is devoted to all things wind. It carries kites for kids, stunt kites, novelty wind toys and lawn ornaments, and offers rentals and lessons in recreational power kiting, using wind to travel over land, water or — as you may want to try today — snow.

Its hours are 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday, 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday. Rentals and lessons are by appointment. For more details on the store, read the story in The Forum on Tuesday.

Apply for The Forum’s Financial Fix-Up

We’re in the midst of a teachable moment. Today’s economy has us all looking more closely at our money. It may be time for a financial fix-up, whether that’s just a tuneup or a complete overhaul. We are seeking local individuals or families to take part in a new series, The Forum’s Financial Fix-up.

Those selected will receive an individualized financial action plan, created by The Village Family Service Center’s financial counselors. As a reward for following through on their advice, State Bank & Trust is offering $500 to each participating family to help achieve their financial goals.

Participants must be open and honest about their financial lives. After all, those chosen will have their names, occupations and photos printed in the paper. They must also be willing to reflect and change. Participants will be asked to blog about their financial fix-up, here at areavoices.com.

People in all sorts of financial situations are encouraged to apply, whether they’re in debt, newlyweds about to combine finances, nearing retirement and unsure if there’s enough, or saving for a long-term goal like a house, car or college.

To apply, fill out the application here. The deadline for applications is Nov. 28. Those chosen will be contacted in early December. For more information, contact Sherri Richards at (701) 241-5556 or srichards@forumcomm.com.

Josef’s Open House

Josef’s School of Hair Design is celebrating its 50th anniversary this year. We’re working on a story about the school and its namesake and founder, Joseph Olivieri. But before that will be in the paper, the three campuses of the school will host an open house. It’s an opportunity, especially for prospective students, to tour the school. The open house will be 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Friday (Oct. 22) at  its locations in downtown Fargo, off 45th Street South in Fargo and in Grand Forks. For more information, call (800) 201-0012.

Bada Bing!

A new gentlemen’s club, Bada Bing!, has opened on the outskirts of Fargo.

The club is registered at at 4349 48th Ave. N. It’s unclear what city or township it belongs to. Fargo City Assessor Ben Hushka said the address sits in the city’s extraterritorial zone, meaning it’s outside city limits but still under city control for planning and zoning purposes.

In TV reports last night, Bada Bing! owner Michael Benzinger indicated that the club does not serve alcohol, which means dancers are allowed by law to be fully nude. Benzinger told Valley News Live he picked the location because he wanted the club to be out of the way.

Check back later for more on this story, and read more in tomorrow’s Forum.
